Barcelona and The Costa Brava
A National Geographic Expedition

Day 1
Arrive in Barcelona and check into one of Barcelona’s top rated Hotels, the Banys Oriental. Meet fellow photographers that evening at a welcome reception with classic Catalan tapas. (D)

Day 2
Spend the morning surrounded by the magical structures of renowned “Catalan Modernisme” architect, Antoni Gaudi. Start at La Sagrada Familia and then wander through the mosaic riches of Pac Guell. After lunch near the Port, street shoot along the lively Las Ramblas, stopping in the colorful Boquerias (markets). Experience the passion of Flamenco over dinner at the famous Tablao Cordobes. Day 3
Depart early for a full day of shooting at the Montserrat Convent, located 90 minutes outside of Barcelona. For almost 1000 years pilgrims and visitors alike have climbed this spectacular mountain to see this amazing sanctuary. Learn about the "Black Virgin" (La Moreneta), the icon supposedly hidden by Saint Peter fifty years after the birth of Christ. In the afternoon, tour of the Cava Cellars, Spain’s rival to French champagne where there will be the opportunity to sample this delicious beverage and see why it has acquired such a following. Day 4 Virgin de la Merce (week 2)
Walk in the footsteps of artistic genius, Pablo Picasso, including a private guided tour of his must-see museum. Today the Patron Saint of Barcelona is celebrated with the Virgin de la Merce festival. Events include a parade of gegants, giant wooden figures operated by people, sports and musical performances. Mark this special occasion photographing amidst the processions that spring up all around the city. Take advantage of a free evening to catch the amazing fireworks display. (B,L)

Day 5
Discover the Costa Brava. Head off to the photographer’s paradise of Cadaques. After checking into the Hotel Rocamar, get acquainted with this beautiful white washed fishing village with its maze like streets and charming port. The day will end with a lovely seaside dinner at sunset. (B,L,D)

Day 6
Landscape drive to the ancient Monastery Sant Pere de Rodes a Romanesque jewel from the XIII Century. Explore the port town of Selva, outstanding for its varied landscapes, its beaches and its mountains. Dinner is in on your own in Cadaques. (B,L)

Day 7
Travel back in time wandering through this ancient village of Peralada. Bordered by the Pyrenees, where they dive in the sea and overlook the National Park of the Cap de Creus. Peralada makes for magical photographs. In the afternoon taste and tour this famed Spanish wine region at the Castillo Perelada, a magnificent castle, where tradition dates back to Roman times. Then celebrate an extraordinary week with new friends at a farewell dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 8
Early departure for the airport for your return flight home.

Expedition Cost: $3590
Includes 7 nights of hotel accommodations, 4 in the Banys Oriental Hotel in Barcelona and 3 nights in the Rocamar Hotel in Cadaques all lunches and 4 dinners. Airport-Hotel – Airport transfers. Transportation in first class air-conditioned bus. All admissions to museums and parks. All taxes and tips. Airfare from/to your home city is not included in the expedition cost.
