The Maasai Mara — An Immersive PhotoXperience
The Maasai Mara is one of those extraordinary places where you will find yourself looking out across the savannah with the excitement of a first-time visitor. This is Africa at its most spectacular, a vast, wild landscape where every day brings the possibility of something unforgettable.
The Mara is home to Africa’s great predators, lion, leopard and cheetah, along with an incredible diversity of wildlife. But what makes being here so special is not simply the number of animals you may see. It is how close you can get to the experience of watching them live their lives.
These are not moments you observe. You feel them.
And for photographers, the opportunities are extraordinary. Dramatic skies, dust-filled roads, golden-hour light and wildlife constantly moving through an ever-changing landscape create photographs that cannot be planned. Sometimes the most memorable image is the one that happens in the few seconds you never expected
Life in the Field
- A PhotoXperience in the Mara is not a quick morning game drive followed by a leisurely afternoon.
- We are out there before sunrise and often remain in the field until after sunset.
- Those long days are intentional. They put us in the Mara during the most beautiful and productive hours of the day, when the light is at its best and wildlife is often most active.
- And because we spend so much time in the field, breakfast and lunch aren't back at camp. It's out on the savannah.
- There is something wonderfully African about sitting beneath a tree or beside the vehicle, surrounded by the sounds and scenery of the Mara, enjoying a freshly prepared field lunch before heading back out to see what the afternoon brings.
- You never quite know what is going to happen next.
More Than a Safari
- Oltepesi Camp is located within a genuine Maasai village, allowing us to experience the culture and traditions of the Maasai people while staying right in the heart of their community.
- Our accommodation consists of new, spacious safari tents that I like to describe as “hotel rooms on the savannah.” Each has its own ensuite bathroom with a shower, washbasin and flush toilet, giving you the adventure of being in the bush without giving up comfort.
- What makes this experience special is the combination of wildlife, photography, culture and place.
Our goal on every PhotoXperience is to put you in the right place, at the right time, with the right conditions to create exceptional photographs, but also to make sure you experience the people, landscapes, sounds, meals, long days and unexpected encounters that make a destination truly memorable.
Because the Mara isn't something you simply photograph. It is something you experience.
And once you've experienced it, the Mara has a way of staying with you long after you leave.
I hope you will join me there.

THIS ISN’T JUST A SAFARI
IT’S A PHOTOGRAPHER’S MARA.
The difference between seeing an extraordinary moment and creating an extraordinary photograph often comes down to three things: Time. Position. Light.
- Our PhotoXperience is built around all three.
- We don’t follow a sightseeing itinerary.
- We follow the light.
- We stay when the action unfolds.
- We wait when patience is rewarded.
- And when the Mara gives us one of those moments that photographers dream about, we are ready.
- From the first light before sunrise to the final glow after sunset, your days are built around photography.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ADVANTAGE FOR YOUR VEHICLE. YOUR GROUP. YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY.
- Forget squeezing into a crowded safari vehicle and trying to photograph over someone’s shoulder.
- Your group has exclusive use of a private safari vehicle, specially modified with photographers in mind.
LOW-ANGLE PHOTOGRAPHY
Get closer to the perspective of the animals and create images with greater depth, intimacy and impact.
Our home during the PhotoXperience is Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, situated within a genuine Maasai village in the Mara North Conservancy.
Your spacious safari tent is essentially a hotel room on the savannah.
Each tent features:
- Private ensuite bathroom
- Hot shower
- Flush toilet
- Comfortable beds
- And the sounds of Africa outside your door.
Dinner is served at camp while breakfast and lunch are often enjoyed out in the bush.
Dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
Coffe, tea and cookies available at 5:30 am every day
YOUR GUIDES
Our professional Maasai guides know the landscape, the roads and, most importantly, the behaviour of the wildlife.
- They understand photographers.
- They know that we may want to stay with one animal for an hour instead of driving past it in five minutes.
- They understand light.
- They understand positioning.
- And they know that sometimes the most important thing to do is simply wait.
SMALL GROUPS. BIG OPPORTUNITIES.
We limit this PhotoXperience to a maximum of 10 participants.
That means a more personal experience, more room in the vehicle and greater flexibility in the field.
GROUP SIZE: 3–10 PHOTOGRAPHERS
The smaller the group, the lower the participant-to-vehicle ratio and the more personalized the experience becomes.
